Artist Carolyne Jacobs, a member of the ART27 artist residency program has completed a collection of 12 works ahead of the opening of the ART27 Gallery.
The collection comprises six acrylic-on-canvas paintings inspired by African wildlife and six large-scale works created during her studio residency, reflecting Jacobs’ interest in African cultural heritage and contemporary artistic expression.
Speaking ahead of the gallery’s opening, Jacobs said she was excited to see the long-awaited project taking shape and commended Ferenc Donderer for his efforts to establish the gallery.
“I am thrilled for the grand opening of the gallery, a long-awaited milestone that reflects Ferenc Donderer’s tireless dedication. I fully support this initiative and look forward to the journey ahead,” she said.
Jacobs said she hoped the gallery would help draw greater attention to The Gambia’s creative sector and provide local artists with opportunities to reach wider audiences.
“My expectation is that this opening will shine a light on the incredible creativity and rich artistic talent in The Gambia, giving local artists the visibility and platform they truly deserve,” she said.
Jacobs’ involvement with ART27 began after she started searching for a collaborative art space near her home in Gunjur. She was subsequently introduced to Christina Pearson, another member of the ART27 Artist Group, who connected her with Donderer.
According to Jacobs, the relationship developed into a shared commitment to supporting the initiative. She also sourced art materials from the Canary Islands in support of the project.
When Donderer later showed her the premises intended for the gallery, Jacobs said she immediately recognised its potential to become a creative hub.
As the gallery opening approaches, Jacobs has encouraged other ART27 members to support one another and contribute positively to the launch.
“By supporting one another and bringing our best energy to the launch, we can show locals and tourists alike the depth of creative talent in our community and maximise this long-awaited achievement,” she said.
For Jacobs, the gallery represents more than a new exhibition space. She said its opening symbolises resilience, collaboration and a shared vision, while providing Gambian artists with a permanent platform to create, exhibit their work and engage with audiences.
