GID Expands Passport Services to Gambians in Europe

The Gambia Immigration Department’s decision to conduct its fifth mobile biometric passport enrolment exercise in Italy and Spain is a welcome initiative that demonstrates the importance of making essential public services accessible to Gambians living abroad.

From 4 to 11 October 2026, Gambians in Italy, Spain and other parts of Europe will have an opportunity to access passport services without having to travel to The Gambia or navigate costly and complicated arrangements. Such initiatives are particularly important for citizens whose legal documents are essential for travel, employment, residence and other aspects of daily life.

The collaboration between the Immigration Department, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Gambians Abroad is also encouraging. Effective coordination among government institutions is necessary to ensure that diaspora services are delivered efficiently and transparently.

However, the success of the exercise will depend largely on proper communication and organization. Gambians in Europe need timely information about venues, required documents, fees, appointment procedures and other conditions. The authorities should therefore ensure that accurate information reaches communities well ahead of the exercise.

The requirement for applicants to complete online payment before attending the enrolment sessions should also be accompanied by clear guidance, particularly for applicants who may face difficulties accessing online payment platforms.

The mobile passport initiative should not be viewed merely as a temporary intervention. It should form part of a broader and sustainable strategy to improve consular and immigration services for the Gambian diaspora.

The Gambian diaspora makes an important contribution to the country through remittances, investment, skills and international connections. Providing efficient documentation and consular services is therefore not only an administrative responsibility but also an important way of maintaining a strong relationship between citizens abroad and their homeland.

The authorities deserve recognition for expanding mobile biometric passport services, but they should continue improving the system until every Gambian abroad can access essential documentation conveniently, affordably and transparently.
