Ebrima Sanyang, a resident of New Yundum in The Gambia’s West Coast Region, has been convicted of stealing six goats valued at D27,000 and fined D30,000 by a magistrate’s court.
Sanyang was convicted on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, by Senior Magistrate D. Senghore after admitting the charge of stealing cattle, contrary to Section 229 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025.
Cadet Inspector M.A. Jallow, representing the Inspector General of Police, told the court that the case was before it for mention and plea taking.
According to the particulars of the offence, Sanyang stole six goats belonging to Kaddijatou Manjang and Awa Sonko on 3 October 2026 at New Yundum.
The animals were valued at D27,000.
The charge was read to Sanyang in English and interpreted into a language he understood, after which he admitted the offence.
Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor tendered six photographs in evidence. The accused did not object to their admission, and the photographs were admitted as exhibits.
The court was also informed that the stolen goats had been recovered and returned to their owners.
Following the proceedings, the court found Sanyang guilty and convicted him accordingly.
During mitigation, the convict pleaded for mercy.
Senior Magistrate Senghore subsequently fined him D30,000, with a default sentence of one year’s imprisonment.
