Gambian international Seedy Jatta produced an impressive display despite having a first-half goal disallowed as Austrian champions SK Sturm Graz defeated Scotland’s Heart of Midlothian 2-0 on Tuesday to reach the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
Jatta appeared to have given Sturm Graz the lead in the opening half after finding the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
Match officials determined that the Gambian forward had committed a foul on Hearts defender Harry Milne during the build-up to the goal.
Despite the disappointment, Jatta remained a constant threat throughout the match, using his pace, movement and physical presence to unsettle the Hearts defence and create space for his teammates.
The 22-year-old striker played a key role in Sturm Graz’s attacking play as the Austrian side controlled the match and secured a comfortable victory to progress to the next stage of Europe’s premier club competition.
The result sends Sturm Graz into the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, bringing the club a step closer to securing a place in the league phase of the competition.
Heart of Midlothian, meanwhile, exited the Champions League qualifiers and will continue their European campaign in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds.
Jatta has continued to establish himself as an important member of the Sturm Graz squad, with his performances attracting attention as the Austrian champions pursue both domestic and European success this season.
The Gambian international is expected to play a key role in Sturm Graz’s next Champions League qualifying fixture as the club seeks to maintain its progress in the competition.
