The Gambia’s Scorpions staged a remarkable comeback on Tuesday, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Ghana 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium and record their second consecutive victory in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana dominated the opening stages and took the lead in the 27th minute when Lyon forward Ernest Nuamah converted from the penalty spot.
The hosts doubled their advantage six minutes later when Afena-Gyan scored from a free-kick to put Ghana 2-0 ahead.
The Scorpions responded immediately and reduced the deficit in the 37th minute when Riga FC forward Muhammed Badamosi converted a penalty after Abdoulie Bambalie Sanyang was brought down inside the Ghanaian box.
The Gambia completed the first-half comeback three minutes before the break when captain Omar Colley scored a superb volley to make it 2-2.
The visitors carried their momentum into the second half and completed the turnaround in the 68th minute when substitute Ebrima Colley put the Scorpions ahead for the first time.
Ghana pushed for an equaliser, but the Gambian defence remained composed as the visitors looked dangerous on the counter-attack.
Ebrima Colley then sealed the victory in the first minute of stoppage time, converting a cross from Sainey Sanyang to complete his brace and give the Scorpions a 4-2 victory.
The result gives The Gambia six points from two matches and strengthens their position in the early stages of the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
The victory also completed an impressive turnaround for the Scorpions, who had trailed Ghana by two goals during the first half.
