As The Gambia approaches the 5 December 2026 presidential election, preparations for a credible, peaceful and transparent poll must remain a national priority.
The recent pre-election assessment visit by a delegation led by former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield, with former Nigerian electoral commission chairman Professor Attahiru Jega among its members, provides an important opportunity to assess the country’s readiness.
Such assessments should not be viewed as interference in the country’s democratic affairs. Rather, they can help identify weaknesses and encourage the relevant institutions to address them before voters go to the polls.
The credibility of the 2026 election will depend not only on the professionalism of the Independent Electoral Commission but also on the conduct of political parties, candidates, security institutions, the media and, importantly, voters.
The IEC must ensure that voter registration, the voters’ roll, polling arrangements, ballot security, counting procedures and the announcement of results are handled with maximum transparency. Political parties, for their part, must respect the electoral laws and urge their supporters to reject violence and intimidation.
The security forces also have a critical responsibility. Their role should be to protect voters, candidates and electoral officials while maintaining strict political neutrality.
The media must equally exercise responsibility by providing accurate, balanced and timely information and avoiding the spread of misinformation that could heighten tensions.
With the election only months away, there is no room for complacency. Any weaknesses identified through assessment missions should be addressed promptly and openly.
The Gambia has an opportunity to demonstrate that its democratic transition is firmly rooted in credible institutions and peaceful political competition.
A successful election will not be measured merely by the declaration of a winner, but by whether Gambians can vote freely, safely and confidently, knowing that their choices will be respected.
