The Gambia’s campaign at the CAVB African Volleyball Championship ended on Saturday with a 3-0 defeat to Rwanda in their final match of the competition.
The Gambian team had earlier suffered narrow defeats against defending champions Egypt and Morocco, leaving them with little room for error heading into their final group match.
The defeat to Rwanda brought an end to The Gambia’s participation in the continental championship after a challenging campaign against some of Africa’s leading volleyball nations.
Despite the results, the Gambian players gained valuable experience from competing against established teams at the continental level.
The matches against Egypt, Morocco and Rwanda provided the team with an opportunity to assess its level of preparation and competitiveness against stronger opposition.
The campaign is expected to provide lessons for the continued development of volleyball in The Gambia, particularly in areas such as preparation, regular international competition and investment in player development.
The Gambia will now turn its attention to strengthening its national volleyball programme ahead of future regional and continental competitions.
