The Gambia International Fashion Week (GIFW) Wednesday presented Matty Jobe as the new face of the Gambia International Fashion Week 2026.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC) office in Fajara, GIFW Event Coordinator Fatima Mulushi explained that the organisation was established as a non-profit platform to support and empower young designers, stylists, models and other creatives in the fashion industry.
“Our vision is to create visibility, training and real career opportunities for young people who are passionate about fashion and creativity, both here in The Gambia and internationally,” Mulushi said.
She said GIFW believed that talented young Gambians should not have to leave the country in search of opportunities, adding that the platform sought to provide an alternative pathway for young people who might otherwise view irregular migration as their only option for a better future.
Mulushi said the organisation aimed to create an environment where young Gambians could develop their skills, build businesses, create jobs and compete at international level.
She also highlighted the organisation’s focus on environmental sustainability through fashion.
“We want to encourage a new generation to look at waste differently. Through fashion, we can teach young people how to reuse materials, reduce waste and transform things that would otherwise end up on our roadsides and in our communities into something valuable and beautiful,” she said.
Mulushi further said GIFW would promote local textile production and encourage designers to use locally made materials and products.
The outgoing face of Gambia International Fashion Week, Grace N. Gomez, expressed appreciation to the organisation and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting its work.
She said she was confident that the responsibility had been handed over to capable hands and stressed the importance of preserving and promoting Gambian arts and culture.
“Our roots are our culture. The person in control will do justice,” Gomez said.
Representing the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Sanna B. Jarju welcomed participants and commended their continued support towards making the event a success.
He described the occasion as an important milestone for the country’s cultural and fashion industry, noting that fashion plays an important role in responding to societal needs.
“This event is a stepping stone in adding value to the fashion design industry. Fashion is dynamic as it is about trends,” Jarju said.
He commended the organisers for their commitment to promoting arts and culture and reaffirmed the NCAC’s continued collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen the sector.
Winners of this year’s competition will have the opportunity to participate in a study trip to leading fashion universities, providing them with international exposure, educational opportunities and the chance to learn from institutions within the global fashion industry.
