The Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ) has submitted recommendations to the Presidential Task Force on Electricity Supply, calling for reliable and affordable electricity, stronger domestic power generation and greater investment in renewable energy.
In a statement issued on September 29, the rights organisation said its recommendations were aimed at strengthening the country’s response to the ongoing electricity challenges.
Through its NAWEC Watch initiative, EFSCRJ also called for greater transparency in the management of public funds allocated to the electricity sector.
The organization said clear deadlines and regular public reporting should accompany measures taken to address the power situation, stressing that investments in the sector should deliver measurable results.
EFSCRJ said citizens deserve an electricity supply they can depend on and urged the authorities to ensure that efforts to address the crisis are accompanied by accountability and public information.
The recommendations come as the Presidential Task Force continues its work on measures to address the country’s electricity supply situation. President Adama Barrow announced the task force on September 8, saying it would report directly to him and provide public updates every two weeks.
EFSCRJ said through NAWEC Watch, it will continue to monitor developments in the electricity sector and push for transparency, accountability and improved service delivery.
