United Democratic Party (UDP) leader, Ousainou Darboe says his party will work to stabilize the national economy if elected into office in the 2026 presidential election.
Speaking at a political rally in Sambuya Village, Kombo South, on Sunday, Darboe said a UDP government would focus on addressing the pressing needs of citizens and fulfil longstanding promises made to Gambians by previous governments.
He said some of the outstanding promises included stabilizing the national economy, strengthening the value of the national currency, the Dalasi, ensuring Gambians benefit more from the country’s marine resources and providing markets for produce grown by women gardeners.
“These are some of the promises made and remain unfulfilled. I want to fulfil these promises. That is one of the reasons I am seeking the presidency,” Darboe remarked.
He said the UDP could only achieve its political objectives with the support of Gambians and appealed to voters to give the party an opportunity to govern.
He also pledged that a UDP government would make national security a priority in order to improve the safety and protection of citizens and residents.
Turning to the public sector, Darboe said his government would seek to improve the working conditions and welfare of civil servants, particularly teachers, nurses, police officers and other public-sector workers.
He pointed out that the government would consider measures including access to loans and housing schemes to help civil servants achieve better living conditions during their working years and after retirement.
Darboe urged residents of Kombo South to support his candidacy, saying a UDP government would address issues affecting citizens and work towards improving their living conditions.
