Ousainou Darboe, leader of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has warned Gambians against re-electing President Adama Barrow, saying another term for the incumbent could further damage the country’s economy.
Speaking at a political rally organized by the UDP-led Gambia First Coalition in Alluhari, Upper River Region (URR), Darboe accused the Barrow administration of taking what he described as “deliberate actions” that have weakened the country’s economic stability.
“If you mistakenly vote for Barrow to stay in power beyond December, he will firstly damage your economy,” Darboe told supporters at the rally.
He also criticized the government’s handling of the health and agricultural sectors, alleging that funds intended to support farmers were being mismanaged.
“Secondly, your healthcare system will not be considered by him. Thirdly, any fund that comes to the country to support farmers will all be mismanaged by his government in buying luxury vehicles, unending workshops and conferences. This will worsen the agricultural sector,” he alleged.
Darboe urged Gambians, particularly young people, to make a “fierce, sustained and determined” effort to vote out the Barrow administration in the December presidential election.
He said the country needed its citizens to take an active role in determining its future, adding that previous generations had made efforts to challenge what he described as “self-perpetuating leadership.”
Darboe called on the youth to take up that responsibility in December and vote for a UDP government.
He said a UDP administration would seek to address the needs of Gambians, particularly young people, by creating opportunities that would have a direct impact on their lives.
Darboe also paid tribute to UDP supporters who died in a road accident while travelling to attend the Alluhari rally.
He prayed for Allah to forgive their shortcomings and grant them the highest place in Jannah.
