Basse Police Prosecution Unit has secured convictions in five separate criminal cases before the Basse Magistrates’ Court, according to a report issued by the Inspector General of Police on 15th September 2026.
The cases, heard before Magistrate I. Dibba on 9 September, involved offences including rape, burglary, stealing, housebreaking and road traffic violations.
The first case involved the Inspector General of Police versus Ebrima Trawally who was the accused and was later convicted of rape and sentenced to ten years mandatory imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay D200,000 in compensation to the victim, or in default serve an additional two years imprisonment. The sentences were to run consecutively.
The second case involved the Inspector General of Police versus Mamadou Jang Jallow who was the accused and pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and stealing. He was fined D50,000 on the first count, or in default to serve one year imprisonment, and D25,000 on the second count, or in default to serve six months’ imprisonment. The sentences were to run consecutively.
Meanwhile, another case involved the Inspector General of Police versus Modou Lamin Jallow who faced five road traffic-related charges and pleaded guilty to three of them.
He was fined D25,000, or in default to serve three-month-imprisonment, on count one; D5,000, or one month imprisonment, on count two; and D5,000, or one month imprisonment, on count five. He was also ordered to pay D25,000 in compensation for injuries sustained by a police officer, or in default serve an additional one month imprisonment. The remaining two counts were withdrawn by the prosecution.
The fourth case was between the Inspector General of Police versus Omar Trawally and Muhammed Sankareh, both of whom were charged with conspiracy, housebreaking and stealing and were subsequently convicted. Omar Trawally was fined D100,000 on count one, or in default to serve four years’ imprisonment; D50,000 on count two, or one year imprisonment; and D50,000 on count three, or serve one year imprisonment. He was further ordered to pay D325,000 in compensation for the complainant’s material loss, or in default to serve an additional two years’ imprisonment.
For Muhammed Sankareh, the report indicated that he was fined D100,000 on count one, or in default to serve four years imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay D325,000 in compensation, or in default to serve an additional two years imprisonment.
The last case was between the Inspector General of Police versus Alieu Kandeh who was the accused and pleaded guilty to two counts relating to breaking into a building and stealing. He was fined D50,000 on count one or in default, to serve two years imprisonment, and D50,000 on count two or in default, to serve one year imprisonment.
He was also ordered to pay D15,000 in compensation to Nasir Senior Secondary School or in default, to serve an additional six-month-imprisonment.
