President Adama Barrow has called on Gambians to uphold peace, unity and responsible citizenship as Muslims across the country celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr (Koriteh), marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
In a message to the nation, President Barrow expressed gratitude to Allah for enabling Muslims to observe the fast and prayed for continued peace and good health for the country.
He described Ramadan as a period of devotion, sacrifice and reflection, stressing that the values of compassion, generosity and solidarity should continue to guide national life and service to humanity.
The President congratulated the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and commended religious leaders for their guidance throughout the fasting period, praying for continued blessings upon their leadership.
He noted that this year’s Ramadan was observed amid global instability, underscoring the importance of peace, cooperation and dialogue in addressing international challenges.
“As Chairman of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, The Gambia remains concerned about ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and other regions,” he said, calling for the peaceful resolution of disputes and stronger international cooperation.
President Barrow further stated that global challenges continue to affect national economies, including The Gambia’s, urging citizens to remain calm, united and focused on strengthening national resilience.
He highlighted progress made since 2017 in rebuilding institutions, strengthening democracy and improving livelihoods, pointing to investments in infrastructure, health, education and agriculture.
Barrow also said The Gambia is gaining growing international recognition as a reliable partner, attributing this to its commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
He underscored the importance of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, describing them as key pillars of national unity.
The President warned that political competition must not undermine national stability or development, urging all actors to prioritise patriotism and the national interest.
“Politics should promote good governance and unity rather than division,” he added.
President Barrow also extended goodwill to Christians observing Lent, praying for peace and blessings for them and the nation.
He commended charitable organisations, businesses and individuals for supporting vulnerable groups during Ramadan, while urging traders to avoid unjustified price increases on essential goods.
“As we celebrate Koriteh, let us remember those suffering from conflict and renew our commitment to peace and solidarity,” he said.
He concluded by calling on Gambians to celebrate responsibly, strengthen good neighbourliness and work together to build a peaceful and prosperous nation.
