A Nation Must Choose Unity Over Division

As The Gambia approaches the 5 December 2026 presidential election, the tone of political discourse is becoming increasingly heated. Campaigns are intensifying, alliances are shifting, and competing visions for the country’s future are taking shape. While robust political competition is a hallmark of democracy, the nation must ensure that rivalry does not give way to hostility.

The greatest strength of The Gambia is not its political parties but its people. Citizens from different regions, ethnic groups and political beliefs have repeatedly demonstrated that peaceful coexistence is possible. The peaceful transfer of power in 2017 and subsequent democratic progress remain achievements worth protecting. They should never be sacrificed for short-term political gain.

Political leaders carry a special responsibility. Their words influence thousands of supporters, and careless rhetoric can easily inflame tensions. Every candidate and party should reject insults, misinformation and intimidation, and instead present practical solutions to the pressing issues confronting Gambians—unemployment, the rising cost of living, quality education, healthcare and economic opportunity.

The media also has a vital role to play. Journalists must remain committed to accuracy, fairness and responsible reporting. In an age where rumours spread rapidly through social media, verified information is more valuable than ever. A well-informed electorate is essential for credible elections.

Equally, voters must remember that political opponents are not enemies. Elections come and go, but neighbours, families and communities remain together long after ballots are counted. Respectful debate strengthens democracy; violence and hatred weaken it.

The months ahead will test the maturity of our democratic institutions and our collective patience. The Independent Electoral Commission, security services, civil society and political actors must work together to guarantee a free, fair and peaceful electoral process.

The Gambia stands at another defining moment. Let this election be remembered not for division or conflict, but for unity, tolerance and the triumph of democratic values. The future of the nation depends on the choices we make today.
