The Government of The Gambia on Tuesday tabled the Auditor General’s report on the 2025 financial statements at the National Assembly within the constitutional deadline, a development lawmakers described as unprecedented in over three decades.
Presenting the report, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Seedy Keita said the financial statements reflect the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, transparency and accountability in public financial management.
He said the accounts were prepared in accordance with internationally recognised public sector accounting standards and include cash receipts and payments, revenue and expenditure, as well as other required financial disclosures.
Keita described the timely submission of the 2025 accounts as a significant milestone in strengthening public financial reporting and improving confidence in state financial systems.
He added that meeting the constitutional deadline demonstrated the government’s determination to ensure timely provision of accurate financial information to Parliament and the public.
Following the presentation, the Speaker of the National Assembly said the timely tabling of audited accounts marked an important step in promoting transparency, accountability and good governance.
He commended the Auditor General and the Accountant General for their collaboration in ensuring compliance with the constitutional requirement.
The Speaker noted that, in his experience, it was the first time audited government accounts had been submitted within the six-month constitutional timeframe after the end of the financial year, describing the development as a significant institutional achievement.
The report was subsequently referred to the Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC) for detailed scrutiny following a motion moved by the Member for Banjul South and adopted by the Assembly.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Fatoumatta Njie of Banjul South said Parliament should acknowledge positive developments in public financial management, adding that the timely submission of accounts was a notable achievement in her parliamentary experience.
The Speaker urged FPAC members to carefully examine the Auditor General’s findings and recommendations, stressing that parliamentary oversight would be essential in strengthening accountability and ensuring the proper management of public resources.
He thanked the Auditor General, the Accountant General and their teams for what he described as their efforts in achieving compliance with constitutional requirements.
