Gambian karate athletes received a warm welcome on their return from the Senegal Open Championship 2026 in Dakar, where they won eight medals, including one gold, one silver and six bronze.
Family members, supporters, club representatives and officials of the Gambia Karate Federation gathered at the Banjul Sea Port on Monday to celebrate the team’s achievement at the regional competition.
Edrisa Jallow led the Gambian medal haul, winning the country’s only gold medal in the Kata category after an impressive performance throughout the tournament.
The nine-athlete Gambian delegation also secured one silver medal and six bronze medals, underscoring the growing competitiveness of the sport in the country.
Officials of the Gambia Karate Federation hailed the team’s performance, describing it as a reflection of the dedication and hard work of the athletes and their coaches.
The delegation was received by the federation’s Technical Director, Sensei Pateh Jobe, who commended the athletes for representing The Gambia with distinction.
“This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our athletes, coaches, clubs and federation. We are proud of what they have accomplished for The Gambia,” Jobe said.
National coaches Mbye Nyang and Momodou Jallow also praised the athletes for their commitment and fighting spirit, noting that the championship provided valuable international exposure for the team.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, gold medalist Edrisa Jallow thanked the federation, coaches, supporters and the Gambian government for their support throughout the competition.
