The Coalition Mediation Taskforce Committee (CMTC) has announced the adoption of a candidate-led coalition model to face the incumbent in the December 2026 presidential election.
This is the approach that will bring together opposition parties and political movements as they intensify efforts to challenge the incumbent National People’s Party.
In a statement issued on Monday, the committee said the decision was reached during its ninth strategic session held on 20 June 2026 at the African Princess Hotel.
The session brought together representatives of seven registered opposition political parties and 10 political movements. The meeting was hosted by the Unite Movement for Change, led by Talib Ahmed Bensouda.
According to the committee, the coalition mediation process is aimed at fostering consensus among opposition parties and political movements and coordinating a common strategy ahead of the 2026 presidential election.
“Delegates reached consensus to establish the coalition as a candidate-led model, setting the strategic direction for the alliance,” the committee said.
The committee disclosed that participating members signed key documents, including the coalition’s Terms of Reference, a Confidentiality Code and a Code of Conduct for the General Assembly.
It added that discussions during the session focused on building a united opposition front capable of presenting a single candidate in the December presidential election.
The CMTC says the adoption of the candidate-led model represents another milestone in the coalition-building process and reflects the commitment of participating groups to work towards a common electoral objective.
According to the committee, the next strategic session will be hosted by the Citizens’ Coalition for Change at the Baobab Hotel.
