The Youth President of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Suwaneh, has called on Gambians to unite as the country moves closer to the next presidential elections.
In an interview with The Voice Newspaper, he said responsible governments should prioritize productive sectors of the economy to ensure sustainable development.
Suwaneh cited Ghana as an example, stating that food inflation in that country stood at 28.3 percent before the current administration assumed office following the 2024 general election.
He claimed that after President John Dramani Mahama was sworn in on 7 January 2025, Ghana recorded a significant reduction in food inflation, which he said dropped to 2.9 percent, attributing the improvement to increased investment in irrigation and food production.
He also referenced currency performance in Ghana, stating that the cedi strengthened from about GH¢14.69 to the US dollar at the start of 2025 to GH¢10.4 by July, and appreciated by 40.7 percent by the end of the year, describing it as a sign of improved economic management.
Turning to The Gambia, Suwaneh said President Adama Barrow had promised to reduce the price of rice from D1,150 to D700, but claimed the price has instead risen to over D2,000.
He argued that the depreciation of the dalasi and rising cost of living have increased hardship for ordinary citizens.
Suwaneh also criticized the government’s recently launched nine-point manifesto, describing it as ineffective and costly, and alleged that it reflects deeper governance challenges.
He further referenced findings by the National Assembly’s Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC), which reportedly identified a D5.02 billion discrepancy in government accounts, calling for urgent action by the Accountant General’s Department.
He urged government to act on audit recommendations and address rising crime rates in the country, while expressing confidence in UDP leader Ousainou Darboe’s commitment to fighting corruption and improving citizens’ livelihoods.
