The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) will lead the country’s celebration of International Olympic Day 2026 on Saturday in Farafenni, bringing together athletes, young people and community members to promote healthy living and the values of the Olympic Movement.
The event, to be held under the global theme, “You Can Do This! Let’s Move”, is expected to attract participants from across the country, including athletes, students, youth groups, sports associations and members of the public.
International Olympic Day is observed annually around the world to encourage people of all ages and abilities to engage in physical activity while promoting the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect.
According to organisers, this year’s celebration will transform Farafenni into a centre of sporting and community activities aimed at encouraging Gambians to adopt active and healthy lifestyles.
The event will also highlight the role of sport in promoting social inclusion, education and community development.
Organisers said the celebration is designed not only to promote physical activity but also to demonstrate the power of sport to unite people regardless of age, gender or background.
The 2026 theme, “You Can Do This! Let’s Move”, forms part of the International Olympic Committee’s global campaign to encourage movement and well-being in communities around the world.
GNOC said the event will provide an opportunity for Gambians to join the international community in marking Olympic Day while celebrating the values of solidarity, friendship and healthy living that underpin the Olympic spirit.
Large public participation is expected during the celebrations in Farafenni
