A spokesperson of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) in the North Bank Region has rejected claims that President Adama Barrow is the front-runner ahead of The Gambia’s next presidential election.

Karamo Njie was reacting to remarks by the National People’s Party (NPP) West Coast Region Chairman, Lamin Jamba Jammeh, who reportedly said President Barrow stood a strong chance of winning the forthcoming presidential poll.

Njie argued that many Gambians were seeking political change, citing economic hardship, unmet expectations and governance concerns.

He alleged that citizens were facing increasing difficulties due to what he described as poor leadership, corruption and mismanagement of public resources.

The UDP spokesperson further claimed that public dissatisfaction with the government would be reflected at the polls.

Njie also disputed assertions that voters did not want a change of government, arguing that opposition parties had performed strongly in recent local government elections.

He maintained that the ruling NPP’s electoral support was limited in some parts of the country and rejected suggestions that the party enjoyed widespread support in the West Coast Region.

The NPP has consistently maintained that it remains popular among voters and is well positioned ahead of the next presidential election.

The presidential election is expected to be held in December.
