The government will review the salaries and allowances of chiefs across the country, Minister of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs Hamat N.K. Bah has announced.
He says President Adama Barrow will convene a national gathering of traditional leaders (“Mansa Benn”) later this year.
Speaking at the inauguration of Alhaji Yahya Jarjusey as Paramount Chief of The Gambia in Soma on Sunday, Bah said the measures form part of President Adama Barrow’s efforts to strengthen the institution of chieftaincy and improve service delivery at the community level.
He described the event as historic, noting that it marked the first appointment of a Paramount Chief since President Barrow assumed office.
Bah said traditional leaders remained central to peacebuilding, dispute resolution and the preservation of Gambian culture and values. He urged chiefs to continue fostering stability and unity in their respective communities.
The minister also disclosed that President Barrow has directed that a national Mansa Benn bringing together chiefs from across the country be organized this year, with preparations to be undertaken in consultation with governors and traditional leaders.
According to Bah, the government will provide the necessary logistical and administrative support to ensure the Office of the Paramount Chief functions effectively.
He concluded by calling on chiefs to work collectively to safeguard peace and stability, describing traditional leadership as a vital pillar of national development.
