Presidential aspirant and leader of the Alliance of Social Democrats (ASD), Marie Sock, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of The Gambia’s governance system, saying far-reaching reforms are needed to address longstanding political and institutional challenges.

Addressing supporters on Monday, Sock said the country must “press the reset button” to strengthen governance and lay the foundation for sustainable national development.

She said Gambian politics remains largely driven by personal interests rather than policy and national priorities, urging citizens to critically assess political leaders and support those capable of advancing national development.

Sock said the political changes expected in 2016 have not fully materialised, making it necessary to revisit and reform existing governance structures. She said such reforms are needed to improve accountability, inclusiveness, and effective leadership.

The ASD leader also called on young people to play a more active role in shaping the country’s future, particularly on issues such as employment, food security, healthcare, and social justice.

She urged youths to emulate civic engagement seen in neighbouring Senegal and to move beyond reliance on political handouts, instead demanding policies that improve livelihoods and expand opportunities.

Sock outlined her vision for the Alliance of Social Democrats, describing it as a movement committed to social democratic values and public accountability.

She said citizens must play a stronger role in holding leaders accountable and ensuring that campaign promises are implemented.

Looking ahead to the December 2026 presidential election, Sock said her objective is to promote reforms that would benefit future generations and provide a durable framework for national development.

She called for unity and collective action, saying meaningful change can only be achieved through active citizen participation in national governance.
