A Welcome Step Towards Accountability

The National Assembly’s decision to establish a Standing Committee on Government Assurances marks an important milestone in strengthening democratic accountability and parliamentary oversight in The Gambia.

For years, ministers and government representatives have made commitments on the floor of the Assembly and before parliamentary committees, yet there has been no formal mechanism to systematically track whether those promises were fulfilled. While existing procedures allow for follow-up on resolutions and committee reports, assurances made during debates and hearings have often escaped structured scrutiny.

The newly established committee seeks to address this gap. By maintaining a Register of Assurances and monitoring the implementation of commitments made by the Vice President, ministers and other government officials, the committee introduces a level of transparency that has long been needed. Citizens deserve to know whether promises made in their name are translated into action.

Equally significant is the committee’s authority to seek information from ministries and agencies, assess progress, and report quarterly to the Assembly. These provisions ensure that government assurances will no longer disappear into parliamentary records without follow-up. The possibility of recommending sanctions, including contempt proceedings for persistent non-compliance, further underscores the seriousness of the initiative.

However, the success of the committee will depend not only on its mandate but also on its independence, diligence and political will. Members must approach their work objectively and resist partisan considerations. Government institutions, in turn, must cooperate fully by providing timely and accurate information.

Parliamentary oversight is most effective when it moves beyond debate and into measurable accountability. The establishment of the Standing Committee on Government Assurances sends a clear message that commitments made before the people’s representatives must be honoured.

If implemented effectively, this committee could become one of the most significant accountability mechanisms within the National Assembly, helping to strengthen public trust in governance and ensuring that promises made to Gambians are promises kept.
