Two brothers accused of attacking each other with broken bottles during a dispute in Kololi have been granted bail by the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court pending the commencement of their trial.
Amat Jammeh and Ismaila Jammeh appeared before Magistrate Awa Manneh on charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, contrary to Section 196 of the Criminal Offences Act. Both men denied the allegations when the charges were read and explained to them in a language they understood.
According to the prosecution, each of the accused is alleged to have inflicted injuries on the other during an altercation that occurred on 2 June 2026 in Kololi, within the Kanifing Municipality.
The first count alleges that Amat Jammeh unlawfully assaulted Ismaila Jammeh with a broken bottle, causing injuries to his neck and forehead. The second count alleges that Ismaila Jammeh also assaulted Amat Jammeh with a broken bottle, causing injuries to his face and chest.
While entering his plea, Ismaila Jammeh told the court that the first accused is his brother and that they share the same parents. He further stated that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Narrating the facts, Prosecutor Sergeant 3217 E. Camara told the court that the incident occurred when Amat Jammeh was returning home from Kololi Tarwan. Upon arriving at his residence, he allegedly met his younger brother, Ismaila, who requested D1,500 from him.
The prosecutor said Amat informed his brother that he had no money to give him, leading to an argument between the two. During the confrontation, the prosecution alleged that Ismaila broke a bottle and stabbed Amat. A third brother reportedly intervened and separated them before the matter was reported to the police.
Sergeant Camara further informed the court that the injured parties were taken for medical treatment and that medical certificates were issued. The prosecution applied to tender the certificates, which were signed by Dr. Ebrima A. Jallow and dated 5 June 2026. The court admitted the documents into evidence.
The prosecution also tendered a shirt and singlet allegedly worn by Ismaila Jammeh on the day of the incident. According to the prosecutor, the clothing was stained with blood. The exhibits were admitted and marked accordingly by the court.
Following the presentation of the initial evidence, the prosecution requested an adjournment to secure its first witness and indicated that it had no objection to the accused persons being granted bail.
In her ruling, Magistrate Manneh admitted both accused persons to bail in the sum of D15,000 each with one Gambian surety. The sureties are required to deposit valid national identification cards with the court registrar and undertake to ensure the accused persons’ attendance throughout the proceedings.
The magistrate warned that any surety could be held responsible if an accused person absconds.
The case was adjourned to 6th July 2026 for the commencement of hearing.
