The Confederation of Gambian Industries (CGI) has welcomed the inauguration of The Gambia’s first Food and Drug Laboratories, describing the development as a major boost for industrial growth, consumer protection and public health systems.
In a statement issued on 5 June 2026, the Confederation said the laboratories, inaugurated by President Adama Barrow, would strengthen quality assurance mechanisms and provide local manufacturers with access to testing, inspection and certification services within the country.
According to CGI, Gambian businesses have for years depended on laboratory services abroad to verify product quality and comply with regulatory requirements.
The Confederation said the establishment of domestic testing facilities is expected to reduce operational costs, improve efficiency and accelerate product approval processes for local manufacturers.
CGI also welcomed President Barrow’s commitment to working closely with manufacturers and producers to improve standards and enhance the competitiveness of locally produced goods.
The organisation noted that the laboratories would help Gambian products meet regional and international standards, particularly within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) market.
It added that access to internationally recognised testing and certification services could create greater export opportunities for local producers.
The Confederation further commended government efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight and combat the circulation of counterfeit, substandard and illegal products.
According to CGI, modern laboratory facilities will contribute to protecting consumers while promoting fair competition among businesses.
The organisation also stressed the need for professionalism, integrity and accountability in the management of the new laboratories, noting that public confidence would depend on maintaining high operational standards.
CGI reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with government institutions, regulators and development partners to ensure the laboratories deliver benefits to both industry and consumers.
The Confederation described the inauguration of the facilities as a significant national achievement capable of supporting local manufacturing, boosting consumer confidence and strengthening The Gambia’s participation in regional and international trade.
