Staff members of the University of Education, The Gambia (UEG) have begun a sit-down strike effective 1 June 2026 over what they describe as unresolved demands submitted to the university management.

In a letter dated 1 June and addressed to the Vice Chancellor, the Academic Staff Association of the University of Education, The Gambia said it had previously issued a 14-day notice following management’s failure to respond satisfactorily to concerns raised earlier.

The association recalled that it had communicated its demands to the university authorities and subsequently issued a notice to allow management sufficient time to address the issues.

“Regrettably, there has been no satisfactory progress on the matters presented,” the association said in the letter.

It added that staff members would withdraw their services from 1 June 2026 until the demands submitted to management were adequately addressed.

The association said the industrial action was consistent with resolutions previously communicated to the university administration.

Despite the strike, the staff body expressed hope that the university authorities would take prompt steps to resolve the dispute and facilitate the resumption of normal academic activities.

Copies of the letter were also forwarded to the Chairperson of the Governing Council, the Head of the School of Education and the President of the Staff Trade Association.

The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities at the university as discussions between staff representatives and management continue.
