The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has called for independent investigations into allegations involving several senior public officials, arguing that the claims raise concerns about accountability and public confidence in national institutions.

In a statement, the party expressed concern over allegations circulating in the public domain involving National Security Adviser Abubakarr Suleiman Jeng, Chief of Defence Staff Lt. Gen. Mamat Cham, and National Assembly Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie.

The UDP said allegations against Mr. Jeng have linked him to foreign nationals reportedly involved in drug trafficking activities, while allegations against Lt. Gen. Cham include claims of corruption, abuse of office and the alleged use of boats confiscated from suspected illegal migration organisers for private commercial fishing activities.

The party also referred to audio recordings circulating publicly and alleged to contain the voice of Mr. Njie, which it said suggest discriminatory practices relating to employment opportunities and access to government benefits based on tribal affiliation and political association.

The UDP said the allegations are particularly concerning because they involve individuals occupying positions connected to national security and public oversight institutions.

It argued that national security institutions must remain professional, impartial and accountable in order to maintain public confidence and national cohesion.

The party warned that any erosion of trust in such institutions could have implications for stability, democratic governance and the rule of law.

The UDP called on President Adama Barrow, the National Security Council, the National Assembly and relevant oversight and anti-corruption bodies to establish what it described as independent and credible investigations into the allegations.

It said the claims should be thoroughly examined in the interest of transparency, accountability and justice.

The party further reiterated its support for comprehensive Security Sector Reform (SSR), which it said is necessary to strengthen professionalism, improve accountability mechanisms and protect public institutions from corruption, political interference and other forms of abuse.

The UDP said it remains committed to promoting democratic governance and institutions that serve the national interest.

The officials named in the statement have not publicly responded to the allegations cited by the UDP, and no findings of wrongdoing have been established by a court or competent authority.
