The Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ) has called for an independent and transparent investigation following the resignation of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. Mamat Cham.
The call follows a State House announcement confirming that President Adama Barrow had received and accepted the resignation of Lt. Gen. Cham on 29 May 2026.
EFSCRJ said it had taken note of allegations surrounding the former CDS, which it described as serious and damaging to the integrity of the Gambia Armed Forces if proven true.
The organisation stated that the alleged actions, which include the misuse of office, military resources, and personnel for personal gain, represent a breach of public trust and undermine the professionalism and discipline of the armed forces.
EFSCRJ said the conduct, if established, would constitute a violation of the oath of office and pose risks to national security and institutional credibility.
The rights group called on the President, the National Security Council, and the Armed Forces Council to immediately launch a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the matter.
It further urged that the findings and recommendations of any inquiry be made public and fully implemented without regard to rank or status.
EFSCRJ also called for a broader review of the leadership, management, and operational culture of the Gambia Armed Forces to strengthen accountability, discipline, and professionalism.
The organisation said the alleged case reflects wider concerns about corruption and misconduct in public institutions and stressed the need for consistent enforcement of accountability mechanisms.
It reminded President Barrow, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief, of his constitutional responsibility to ensure adherence to the rule of law within the security sector and public service.
EFSCRJ said the matter should not end with the resignation of the CDS, but should lead to accountability and institutional reform.
