The Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG) has officially handed over a refurbished private ward and donated medical supplies and equipment to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH).

The handover ceremony took place on Friday, May 22, as part of the Central Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme aimed at improving healthcare delivery in the country.

The project involved the rehabilitation of a previously dilapidated section of the hospital, which has now been converted into a 10-room private ward with supporting facilities. The work was carried out by the Engineering Unit of the Gambia Police Force.

Speaking at the ceremony, EFSTH Chief Medical Director, Dr. Mustapha Bittaye, described the project as a moment of “restoration and renewal,” noting that the facility would expand access to specialist care.

He said the ward would cater for patients seeking additional comfort while accessing services at the hospital, while revenue generated would be used to support vulnerable patients.

Dr. Bittaye also commended the Gambia Police Force Engineering Unit for the quality of work delivered and indicated plans to strengthen cooperation between the institutions.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Baboucarr Bey said the project highlighted the importance of collaboration among national institutions, adding that the donated vehicles would enhance the operational capacity of the police.

Central Bank Governor Buah Saidy said the initiative followed discussions with EFSTH management on how CSR interventions could have a more sustainable impact on healthcare services.

He said the private ward was prioritised due to its condition and its potential to improve service delivery and generate revenue for the hospital.

He also announced the donation of additional medical equipment and supplies sourced from a partner organisation in the United States to support the facility.

Minister of Public Service Baboucarr Bouy praised the initiative, describing it as an example of effective inter-institutional cooperation in support of national development goals.

The ceremony concluded with the formal handing over of the refurbished ward, medical supplies, and two pickup vehicles donated to the Gambia Police Force.
