The Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) has intensified efforts to promote women’s wrestling in the country as part of measures to increase female participation in the sport at national and international levels.
The association said it continues to create opportunities for women and girls to excel in wrestling through the promotion of freestyle, Greco-Roman, beach wrestling and traditional African wrestling.
Under the leadership of its president, Matarr Saine, the GWA has maintained initiatives aimed at empowering women through sports and encouraging greater female involvement in wrestling as a means of personal development and success.
Affiliated with United World Wrestling (UWW), the federation has been supporting female wrestlers to participate in local and international competitions, contributing to the country’s growing presence on the global wrestling scene.
The recently concluded TOLAC Wrestling Championship at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium further highlighted the progress of Gambian wrestling, with the national team winning a bronze medal.
The championship also showcased the determination and talent of Gambian female wrestlers, who continue to break barriers and inspire the younger generation to take up the sport.
