African Rights Body Urges Gambia to Respect Civic Freedoms

By Kemo Kanyi

The Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), Dr Idrissa Sow has urged the Gambian Government to enhance tolerance for peaceful civic expression and uphold fundamental human rights.

Speaking on Tuesday at a press briefing on the sidelines of the 87th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in Banjul, Dr Sow says African Union member states are bound by the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which guarantees freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

He stresses that these rights are not privileges granted by authorities but legal obligations under international human rights law.

Responding to questions regarding reported arrests of members of Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), Dr Sow called on authorities to respect and facilitate peaceful assembly, noting that citizens must be allowed to express grievances within the limits of public order.

He added that governments and law enforcement agencies are legally required to protect and enable peaceful gatherings, particularly on matters of public policy and governance.

Dr Sow further encouraged citizens to submit human rights concerns directly to the commission during its sessions, saying the body can only act when properly informed.

He reaffirmed the ACHPR’s commitment to the protection of human rights across member states, adding that a public statement on human rights issues in Africa will be issued following the conclusion of the Banjul meeting.
