Martin Hackett has been sworn in as Special Prosecutor to lead the prosecution of crimes committed under former President Yahya Jammeh’s regime, in a ceremony held Friday at State House.
The appointment marks a key step in The Gambia’s transitional justice process aimed at addressing past human rights violations and ensuring accountability.
Speaking after taking the oath of office, Hackett said victims, survivors, their families, and affected communities remained at the center of his mandate.
“The Special Prosecutor’s Office will carry out its mandate with independence, impartiality and respect for the rule of law. Every prosecutorial decision will be guided by evidence, law and the interests of justice,” he said.
He added that the process would be evidence-based while ensuring respect for the rights of accused persons and continued recognition of the experiences of victims.
President Adama Barrow described the appointment as a “bold step” towards transforming the country’s painful past into a foundation for truth, justice, and national unity.
He says the process reflects the resilience of Gambians and their demand for accountability, particularly victims who testified before the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).
