Opposition coalition adopts governance framework ahead of 2026 polls

By  Haddy Touray

A coalition of 15 opposition political parties, movements and civil society organisations has concluded its third strategic session, adopting key governance frameworks aimed at presenting a united front ahead of the 2026 presidential election.

The coalition, which has declared its intention to defeat the incumbent, said the meeting marked progress toward building a cohesive and credible opposition alliance based on collaboration, transparency and electoral preparedness.

A statement issued by Ebrima Bah, Secretary General of the Coalition Mediation Committee, and obtained by this medium, said the session was hosted by the United Democratic Party (UDP) at the Baobab Holiday Resort.

The Task Force reviewed a proposed Code of Conduct and incorporated enforcement and penalty provisions, aimed at ensuring discipline, mutual respect and accountability among coalition members.

The coalition also began drafting a common policy and governance agenda to align its vision and priorities into a unified campaign platform.

According to the statement, the general assembly agreed on follow-up engagements by the Coalition Mediation Committee to reach out to other opposition groups and reduce fragmentation within the broader opposition bloc.

On electoral matters, the Task Force received updates on a legal assessment of alleged irregularities in voter registration, saying the process reflects its commitment to safeguarding electoral integrity and promoting a free, fair and transparent election.

A transitional mechanism committee covering May to September 2026 will circulate its implementation plan to stakeholders to guide agreed activities.

The coalition announced that its fourth strategic session will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, and will be hosted by APP-Sobeyaa Political Party.

“The Coalition Task Force reiterates its commitment to unity, inclusiveness and democratic principles,” the statement said, adding that progress achieved reflected the shared determination of stakeholders to work collaboratively in the national interest.

The coalition includes ADD, APP-Sobeyaa, CCC, APRC No To Alliance, GPAP, PAP, UDP, UMC, NDP, GMP, Wareef, PASTEF Gambia, PRP, GDC and GFA, alongside civil society organisations.
