 By: Isatou Sarr

A man accused of possessing a large quantity of cannabis has appeared before the Brikama Magistrates’ Court, where he denied the charge and was subsequently granted bail.

Sam Jammeh was arraigned before Magistrate Kanjura B. Sambou on a single count of possession of a prohibited drug, contrary to Section 35(2)(c) of the Drug Control (Amendment) Act 2014.

Prosecuting on behalf of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, ASP L.K. Bojang announced his appearance, while the accused stood unrepresented.

According to the particulars of the offence, Jammeh is alleged to have been found in possession of 918 grams of cannabis sativa on or about 20 January 2025, at Dasilami Village in the West Coast Region.

The charge was read in English and interpreted into Mandinka, which the accused understood and he denied the allegation.

Following the plea, the prosecution applied for an adjournment to enable him call witnesses. The application was not opposed by the defence, and there was no objection to the granting of bail.

The court subsequently admitted Jammeh to bail in the sum of D100,000 with one Gambian surety, who must deposit a valid national identification document with the court registrar and demonstrate sufficient means.

The matter has been adjourned to 10 June 2026 for the hearing of the prosecution’s witnesses.
