As Gambians joined the rest of the world to mark International Workers’ Day, Bakary Y. Badjie, Minister for Youth and Sports, has called for stronger protection of workers against all forms of exploitation.
Workers across the country gathered in Banjul on Friday to commemorate the day, highlighting their contribution to the social and economic development of The Gambia.
In his remarks at the event, Minister Badjie underscored the importance of workers’ solidarity and the need to strengthen labour rights in the face of economic inequality.
“All workers must be protected against economic exploitation, paid decently, and supported to grow within all institutions,” he said.
He further reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the role of sports as a tool for national unity, citing ongoing interventions in sports infrastructure and activities.
Ebrima Gaba Cham, Secretary General of the Gambia Workers’ Union, described International Workers’ Day as more than a celebration, noting that it offers workers an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and reaffirmation of international labour principles.
He emphasised the importance of dialogue as a key instrument for peaceful resolution of labour disputes, adding that such an approach could help position The Gambia’s labour market as an attractive destination for foreign investment in the region.
Lamin Jawara, Chairman of the National Sports Council, also highlighted the significance of the day, stating that the participation of institutions demonstrates their commitment to promoting solidarity, fairness, and collective progress amid economic challenges.
