The Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ) has expressed solidarity with journalists and media workers in The Gambia as the country joins the global commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2026.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the organisation paid tribute to Gambian journalists past and present, highlighting their role in the country’s struggle for independence, democracy, human rights, and justice.
It referenced the legacy of Edward Francis Small and named several deceased journalists, including William Dixon Kolley, Deyda Hydara, and Sanna Tiks Manneh, describing them as “fallen heroes and heroines” whose contributions to journalism and national development would not be forgotten.
EFSCRJ also recognised veteran and active journalists, commending their continued contribution to media development and public accountability in the country.
The organisation said journalists in The Gambia have historically played a central role in promoting accountability and democratic governance.
While acknowledging improvements in the media environment since 2017, EFSCRJ said journalists continue to face challenges, including restrictive laws, legal actions, threats, and economic pressure on media houses.
It noted that some legal provisions affecting the media remain in place despite court rulings, and raised concern over what it described as attempts to introduce regulatory measures that could undermine press freedom.
EFSCRJ also cited incidents of arrests, assaults, and alleged arbitrary actions against media practitioners by both state and non-state actors, calling for greater protection of journalists.
The organisation reminded the government of its constitutional obligations to protect freedom of expression and media independence, as well as its commitments under regional and international human rights instruments.
It urged journalists to remain committed to their professional duties and called on citizens to support and protect the media, describing it as a key pillar of democracy and accountability.
EFSCRJ reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a free and independent press in The Gambia.
