The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has called on political actors to ensure an orderly and lawful supplementary voter registration process currently underway.
The party on Monday said, following recent stakeholder meetings convened by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), it had noted concerns over alleged interference in the registration process and stressed the need to preserve the integrity and smooth conduct of the exercise.
“We urge all our regional executives and supporters to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding throughout this exercise. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to disrupt or interfere with the process in any form. Our commitment is to uphold peace, order, and respect for democratic procedures,” the party said.
The PPP says it fundamentally upholds the rule of law as a core principle guiding its actions and positions.
It further stated that, under the Election Act, the IEC does not have the authority to arbitrarily reject registrations at the point of submission, noting that its role is to receive applications and assess documents at face value, provided they appear valid and untampered.
The party added that any disputes or objections arising from the registration process fall within the jurisdiction of revising courts.
It also noted that the IEC is required to display the provisional voter register publicly, adding that stakeholders, including party representatives, are expected to review the list and submit concerns through appropriate legal channels for consideration by revising courts.
The PPP reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the integrity, transparency, and credibility of the electoral process.
