PDOIS Warns Against Voter Registration Irregularities, Calls For Vigilance

By: Fatou Krubally

The People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) has raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the ongoing voter registration exercise, warning that the inclusion of non-citizens, under-aged applicants and cases of multiple registration could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

PDOIS Secretary General Suwaibou Touray said reports of the use of falsified documents and attempts by ineligible persons to register represent a serious threat to the integrity of the voters’ register ahead of upcoming elections.

He said only eligible Gambian citizens aged 18 and above, with valid identification as required by law, should be allowed to register, stressing that strict adherence to electoral rules is necessary to safeguard the democratic process.

Touray called on traditional and local authorities, including Alkalolu and chiefs, as well as political party agents and civil society organisations, to monitor registration centres and report any suspected irregularities.

He also urged the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) to intensify public awareness on registration procedures and the risks of electoral fraud.

The PDOIS official further called on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), security services and government authorities to take action against anyone involved in unlawful registration activities.

“Democracy cannot be built on manipulation and fraud,” Touray said, adding that the voters’ register must reflect eligible citizens.

He said PDOIS has deployed monitors across registration centres nationwide to observe the process and report irregularities, while encouraging wider civic participation in safeguarding the exercise.

Touray warned that any compromise on the integrity of the voters’ register could weaken public trust in the electoral system.
