Rabat, Morocco (MAP) – The Republic of Mali has announced its decision to withdraw recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), citing considerations related to sub-regional peace and security.

The announcement was made in an official statement delivered by Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, following talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

According to the statement, the Malian government said the decision followed a “thorough review” of the Sahara issue and its implications for regional stability.

Mali also expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, describing it as “the only serious and credible basis” for resolving the dispute, and emphasised that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most realistic solution.

Furthermore, Mali reaffirmed its support for the efforts of the United Nations, including those of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, as well as relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2797 adopted on 31 October 2025.

The statement added that Mali will communicate its decision to regional and international organisations of which it is a member, as well as to the diplomatic corps accredited in Bamako.

Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita is currently on an official visit to Bamako, undertaken under the instructions of King Mohammed VI.
