Gambian authorities and tourism stakeholders on Wednesday welcomed the Italian leisure airline, Neos Air, as it launched its maiden direct flight between Italy and The Gambia.
The inaugural flight arrived at Banjul International Airport to a ceremonial reception attended by officials of the Gambia Tourism Board, Gambia International Airlines, the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority, Air Rep Services and other industry stakeholders.
The aircraft was honoured with a traditional water cannon salute, marking the introduction of a new international route expected to enhance the country’s air connectivity.
Neos Air is initially scheduled to operate one weekly flight on the route, with the possibility of increasing frequency depending on demand, aviation and tourism officials said.
Speaking on behalf of the Director General of the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority, Obi Njie described the launch as a significant milestone for the country’s aviation sector.
He said the new route would improve international connectivity and position The Gambia as an accessible destination for tourists, investors and partners.
Njie added that the development reflects growing confidence in the country’s aviation industry and aligns with efforts to strengthen safety, efficiency and service delivery in accordance with international standards.
He noted that enhanced air links would also contribute to tourism growth, trade facilitation and broader economic development.
A representative of Neos Air in Senegal, Ebrima Njie, said the launch was the result of strong collaboration among key stakeholders, including Gambia International Airlines, the Gambia Tourism Board, the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority and Air Rep Services.
Musa Musa of Air Rep Services described the new connection as a major step in linking The Gambia directly with Italy, expressing hope that the service would expand beyond one weekly flight.
Officials of Gambia International Airlines also welcomed the partnership, highlighting its importance in strengthening the national aviation sector.
Meanwhile, the Gambia Tourism Board said the new route was the outcome of sustained cooperation among government institutions, tourism operators and diplomatic missions.
The Board reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the airline to ensure the sustainability of the route and to boost passenger traffic.
Officials expressed optimism that the direct connection would significantly improve The Gambia’s accessibility and contribute to increased tourist arrivals.
