The Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) has confirmed the arrest of fugitive drug suspect Banta Keita, who is currently in custody.
DLEAG Public Relations Officer Dawda Sanyang told The Voice that Keita, long wanted in connection with the country’s largest cocaine seizure in 2021, has been apprehended.
“Yes, it is true he is under custody at the moment. The public will be informed in due course as to why he was arrested,” Sanyang said.
Keita had previously been implicated in the importation of about two tonnes of cocaine into The Gambia, a case that sparked widespread public concern over drug trafficking in the country.
Reports had earlier indicated that Keita paid a fine into a judiciary account, settling a penalty related to a sentence handed down in absentia.
Authorities have not yet provided further details regarding the circumstances of his arrest.
