Man Faces Charges of Possessing 434g of Cannabis Sativa

One Basiru Kujabi was yesterday arraigned before the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on charges relating to the possession of 434 grams of cannabis sativa. The case was presided over by Magistrate Binta Conteh.

Justice Superintendent M.S. Camara, appearing for the Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG), charged the accused with possession of prohibited drugs, contrary to Section 35 (1) (b) of the Drug Control (Amendment) Act 2014, Laws of The Gambia.

According to the charge sheet, the incident allegedly occurred on 28 May 2025 at Tallinding in the Kanifing Municipality and other places within the jurisdiction of the court, where the accused was allegedly found in possession of 434 grams of cannabis sativa, a prohibited drug.

When the charge was read and explained to him in Wolof, the language he preferred and confirmed he understood, the accused pleaded not guilty, stating that the substance was not found in his possession.

The court subsequently entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.

At this stage, the prosecution applied for an adjournment to enable them secure their witness on the next hearing date.

Prosecutor Camara also informs the court that he did not oppose the granting of bail, noting that the offence is bailable.

In her ruling, Magistrate Conteh granted the accused bail in the sum of D300,000 with two Gambian sureties. Each surety is required to deposit D150,000 or a valid national ID card or passport with the court registrar and swear to an affidavit of means to ensure the accused’s attendance whenever required by the court.

The case was adjourned to 26 March 2026 for continuation.
