PASTEF The Gambia Marks International Women’s Day

The Patriotic Alliance for System Transformation, Emancipation through Functionalism (PASTEF The Gambia) has joined the global community in celebrating the strength, resilience, and contributions of women in The Gambia and around the world.

Mr. Mayorro Sidibeh, Public Relations and Communications Officer for PASTEF, says International Women’s Day is not only a day of celebration but also a moment for reflection and renewed commitment to advancing gender equality, justice, and empowerment. He emphasized that women remained the backbone of families, communities, and national development, making vital contributions across markets, farms, classrooms, institutions, and leadership spaces.

“Gambian women continue to demonstrate courage, innovation, and determination in shaping a better future for our nation,” he said.

Despite these achievements, Sidibeh acknowledged that many women still face structural barriers, economic inequality, gender-based violence, and limited access to opportunities and decision-making roles.

He stresses that true national development cannot be achieved without the full participation, protection, and empowerment of women.

PASTEF The Gambia reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality, protecting women’s rights, and supporting policies that expand access to education, economic opportunities, and leadership.

The movement also called for stronger measures against gender-based violence and discrimination, and encouraged the active participation of women and girls in political, social, and economic transformation.

Highlighting the growing role of young women, Sidibeh notes that they are stepping forward as leaders, innovators, and agents of change, and their voices are essential to building a just and prosperous Gambia. He urged government institutions, civil society, the private sector, and communities to work collectively to remove barriers that hinder women’s progress and create an inclusive society where every woman and girl can realize her full potential.

“As we commemorate this day, let us renew our shared commitment to building a Gambia where equality, dignity, and opportunity are fundamental rights for all,” Sidibeh concluded, wishing all women and girls a happy International Women’s Day.
