Daarul Quran Bi Kanifing Holds Fifth Annual Quran Recitation and Iftar

By: Fatou Krubally

Daarul Quran Bi Kanifing on Saturday held its fifth annual Quran recitation and iftar, (fast-breaking) programme, highlighting the importance of holistic education that balances moral, religious, and conventional learning.

The programme brought together: students, parents, and community members at the school ground in Kanifing.

Aminata Jaiteh, a veteran teacher and one of the Dara’s founders, explained that the after-school program was established to ensure children attending formal schools do not miss out on Quranic education.

“We started with three students, and today we have hundreds,” she said. “Ramadan is a time to reflect, fast, and connect with the Quran. The annual iftar allows parents and children to celebrate together before the last ten days of the holy month.”

Jaiteh stressed the value of holistic education, which nurtures both mind and character. “Education should feed the mind and the soul. Many Gambians focus only on academics, neglecting moral and spiritual development. This initiative ensures children grow in knowledge and character,” she said.

Students shared their experiences balancing schoolwork with Quranic lessons. Mariama Sanyang, a top-performing student, said, “Even if it’s just for an hour or two, attending Dara is very important.”

Ebrima Faye added, “It’s tough after school, but the guidance we receive here helps us grow spiritually and morally.”

Fatima Kebba Suwareh expressed gratitude to the teachers and mentors and encouraged other students from English-medium schools to join the program. “Reading the Quran is very important, and the teachers’ dedication has made a huge difference in our lives,” she said.

Jaiteh concluded by calling on parents to support a dual approach to education, combining Western schooling with Quranic and moral instruction.

“A child educated without morals is incomplete. By nurturing both mind and soul, we build a stronger, more ethical society,” she said.

The event featured heartfelt Quranic recitations followed by a communal iftar, leaving the community hopeful that Daarul Quran Bi Kanifing will continue shaping the next generation of ethically grounded and knowledgeable Gambians.
