DLEAG Destroys 60 Cannabis Farms on Jinack Island

By: Isatou Sarr

The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), has reported the destruction of sixty cannabis farms on Jinack Island in the North Bank Region as part of on-going efforts to curb illicit drug cultivation and trafficking.

The two-day operation, conducted from 28 February to 1 March 2026, involved a multi-agency collaboration including the Gambia Police Force, the Gambia Armed Forces, the State Intelligence Service, the Gambia Immigration Department, the Gambia Fire and Rescue Service, and the Gambia Prison Service.

According to DLEAG, the operation dealt a significant blow to the long-standing illicit cannabis trade on the island, which violates the Drug Control Act, 2003. Section 36 of the Act explicitly prohibits the cultivation of plants from which prohibited drugs can be derived.

The agency assured the public of its continued commitment to enforcing a robust supply suppression regime.

Residents and local communities were encouraged to seek alternative, legal means of livelihood rather than engaging in cannabis cultivation.

Under the oversight of the Ministry of Interior, DLEAG stated that it will continue to implement strategies to control illicit drug trafficking and abuse. The agency emphasized that collaboration with other law enforcement bodies remains central to disrupting drug networks and enhancing public safety.
