The President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, trading as Commonwealth Sport, Dr Donald Rukare, has sent a letter of condolence to the President of the Commonwealth Sport Association of The Gambia, Bai Dodou Jallow, following the passing of Gambian international para powerlifter, Modou Gamo.
In his message, Dr Rukare expressed shock and sadness at Gamo’s death, describing him as one of the para-athletes who put The Gambia on the world stage.
“Modou was one of the para-athletes who put The Gambia on the world stage. His dedication and teamwork were evident at the GAPS camps he attended, as confirmed by the various messages shared by athletes and coaches throughout the day. His smile and positive attitude will be fondly remembered,” the letter stated.
He extended heartfelt condolences, on behalf of Commonwealth Sport, to Gamo’s family, the Gambia CGA, the National Paralympic Committee (NPC), and the Gambian sporting fraternity.
Dr Rukare said Gamo leaves behind a legacy that the CGA will continue to uphold by working closely with the NPC to support emerging para-athletes.
He urged the Gambian sports community to find comfort in the memories Gamo created for the nation as an exemplary ambassador of both the Paralympic and wider Gambian sports movements.
Gamo was The Gambia’s sole para-athlete representative at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham.
