A Kanifing resident, Salieu Jawo, on Monday appeared before Magistrate Awa Manneh at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court charged with possession of 24 grammes of cannabis, commonly known as skunk.

Prosecutor Superintendent M.S. Camara, representing the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEA), told the court that the accused was charged with possession of prohibited drugs contrary to Section 35(1)(a) of the Drug Control Act 2003.

The prosecution alleged that the offence was committed on 9 October 2025 at Manjai Kunda in the Kanifing Municipality, where the accused was allegedly found in possession of 24 grammes of cannabis.

The charge was read and explained to the accused in a language he understands. He pleaded not guilty, stating that he was falsely accused and that nothing was found in his possession.

The prosecutor applied for an adjournment to enable the prosecution to call its first witness. The court granted the application and adjourned the case to 16 March 2026 for hearing.

Magistrate Manneh granted the accused bail in the sum of D50,000 with one Gambian surety, who must deposit a valid national identity card or passport and swear to an affidavit of means.

The prosecution did not object to bail, noting that the offence is bailable under the law.
