The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded Basirou Sarr, accused of attacking a forex bureau in Manjai Kunda, pending his appearance before the High Court.

The proceedings were presided over by Magistrate Conteh, with Police Prosecutor Cadet Inspector S. Manjang appearing on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Sarr faces a charge of attempted robbery contrary to Section 249 (2)(a)(c) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025. Prosecutors allege that on February 10, 2026, at Manjai Kunda, he used violence in an attempt to rob Halimatou Barry, a staff member of AMM Forex Bureau.

Inspector Manjang applied for the case to be transferred to the High Court, noting that the Magistrates’ Court lacks jurisdiction to try capital offences. He explained that offences carrying penalties such as life imprisonment or death must be heard by the High Court.

The application, made under Section 72(1) of the Criminal Procedure Act 2025, requested that the case be moved to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court for trial and determination.

Magistrate Conteh granted the application under Section 228 of the Criminal Procedure Act 2025 and ordered that Sarr be remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison until he appears before the High Court.
