The People’s Movement for National Unity (PMNU) has distanced itself from political remarks made by its Chief Executive Officer, Modou Turo Darboe, reaffirming its non-partisan position.

In a statement issued on 6 February 2026, the organisation said Darboe’s announcement of plans to enter politics in April was made in his personal capacity and does not reflect the movement’s agenda or official position.

The statement said the Board of Directors and leadership held consultations with Darboe following public reactions to his remarks, with the aim of clearly separating his individual political intentions from the organisation’s mandate.

Darboe made the announcement during a naming ceremony in Tallinding over the weekend, where he was honoured as the “Father of the Tallinding Kafoos.”

PMNU reiterated that it remains a neutral national movement founded on inclusiveness and committed to promoting unity, dialogue and national cohesion without political affiliation.

“The announcement does not reflect the agenda, mission or official position of the People’s Movement for National Unity,” the statement said.

The organisation added that it will continue to operate under its guiding principle, “One Gambia, One Nation, One People,” while maintaining an open and inclusive platform for all Gambians regardless of political beliefs.

PMNU thanked its members and supporters and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity and national development.
