GID Gunjur Post Faces Mob Attack, 20 Arrested

By Kemo Kanyi

The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has announced the arrest of 20 individuals following a mob attack on its Gunjur Immigration Post.

The incident occurred as residents protested the arrest of three suspected drug traffickers.

The Gunjur post hosts personnel from the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG), who had detained the suspects and transported them to the station. According to the GID statement on Wednesday, the vandalism took place after the suspects were transferred by DLEAG operatives to Kotu.

The department said the mob threw stones at the station, damaging the roof, office doors, and windows. No personnel were reported injured.

“In response, GID and DLEAG officers in Gunjur conducted a joint operation, apprehending and detaining 20 suspects in the village,” the statement said.

The arrested individuals are undergoing screening and will be handed over to the Gambia Police Force for further investigation.

The GID condemned the attack, describing it as a threat to the safety of personnel and public trust. The department called on communities to exercise restraint, support law enforcement agencies, and protect government facilities.
